What Is a Family Emergency Plan? You want to keep your family safe and healthy. That’s your primary role as a parent and your top priority. Yes, you want them to be happy and successful.

However, healthy always comes first. One of the steps you can take as a family to help ensure safety and wellbeing is to create a family emergency plan.

What Is a Family Emergency Plan?

When most people think about a family emergency plan they think about what a family would do when facing a natural disaster. For example, a fire is coming down the mountain toward your home; what’s your plan?

And while preparing for disasters is part of a family emergency plan, it’s not all of it. A family emergency plan is actually more like a collection of materials and information. The plan should ideally help you keep your family safe and healthy in any situation.

What’s in a Family Emergency Plan?

There are several critical components of a family emergency plan. The first component is your first aid kit. This kit should be comprehensive and contain everything you need to treat injuries and illnesses. That includes medications and supplies.

Your emergency plan should also contain a prioritized list of contact names and relationships. This list might consist of family members, close friends, and community members.

Additionally, you’ll want to include a list of emergency contact information. What’s the number for the emergency room at the hospital and what’s the nearest fire station’s number? Your doctor and even your veterinarian should also be on this list.

How, What, and When?

The third component of a family emergency plan talks about what you’ll do in any given situation. For example, if there’s a tornado, where do you go to stay safe? If family members are separated, where do you meet up?

Create a Checklist

Compiling your family emergency plan can be a lengthy process. There’s a lot of material to cover and you want to make sure you’ve thought of everything.

Consider breaking your plan up into the mentioned categories and creating a list of tasks you need to accomplish. The checklist will help you stay organized and it will ensure a comprehensive plan.

Survival Supplies

In addition to first aid materials and a thorough collection of information, your plan should also include some survival supplies.

For example, what would you need if you were snowed in your home for a few days without water or electricity? You’d need something to keep everyone warm; you’d need water and food. You’d also need a flashlight or two.

Many people also include an emergency cell phone in their family emergency plan.

The final step of a good family emergency plan is to make sure it stays up to date. That means that your supplies don’t expire and that your information is always accurate. Create an annual review process to make sure your plan is still relevant and useful.
